Choosing the Right Shoes: Footwear Tips to Alleviate Bunion Discomfort

If you’re suffering from bunions, Dr. Brian O’Carroll, Dr. Byron Collier, and Dr. Steve Clark at Five Cities Foot & Ankle in Santa Maria and Pismo Beach, CA, are here to help find the most effective care for your needs.

Guide to Choosing the Best Shoes for Bunions

Bunions are an uncomfortable issue in which the toe bone points out while the toe points in, which can lead to a large bump on the outside of the toe. Unfortunately, this can make wearing shoes painful. Dr. O’Carroll, Dr. Collier, and Dr. Clark at Five Cities Foot & Ankle in Santa Maria and Pismo Beach, CA, share some important tips for choosing the best shoes if you’re living with bunions.

1. Go With a Wide Toe Box

A narrow toe box can put even more pressure on the toes, which can worsen the condition. It can also rub against the bony bump and worsen the pain. You can prevent this by choosing shoes with a wide, rounded toe box.

2. Choose Effective Arch Support

If your arches don’t have the right support, you can expect extra pressure on the toes. You need shoes that help distribute your weight evenly and absorb shock as you move.

It’s important to note that shoes are made with a general idea for arches, so you might not find the perfect fit for your feet. Custom orthotics from a podiatrist are designed specifically for your unique needs.

3. Find Flexible Fabric

The stiffer the fabric, the more pressure your toes endure. However, flexible fabrics mold to your foot and allow for easier movement. Some of the most flexible fabrics are canvas, mesh, and soft leather.

4. Stick With Lower Heels

High-heeled shoes cause the foot to move forward in the shoe, which leads to more pressure on the toes. Lower heels – typically no more than two inches – are best. However, the flatter the shoes, the more important proper arch support is.

Whether you’re looking for help in choosing shoes and arch support or treatment for bunions, Dr. O’Carroll, Dr. Collier, and Dr. Clark at Five Cities Foot & Ankle are here for you. Schedule an appointment in Santa Maria and Pismo Beach, CA, by calling (805) 481-9100.
